Born in Salem, Virginia, she was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School and lived in the area her entire life.

Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother. She was happily married to Jimmy Goodykoontz for forty eight years and lived at Belle Aire Circle where she shared her husband’s love for Azaleas. Phyllis served as Brownie Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and was active in the PTA. She loved to listen to talk radio, write editorials and decorate cakes. She supported family through good times and challenging times and provided a source of strength and spirituality. Her canine companion, Xu Fei, brought enormous joy to her life and was treated like a third daughter.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her devoted and adoring husband, Jimmy Goodykoontz, parents, Boyce Johnson Smith and Essie Thomas Smith, sister, Martha Moran, and stepson, Bob Goodykoontz.
