Joseph Herman Reich, Sr., 87 of Salem, departed this earthly life on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.
He was born on July 19, 1929. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Beverly Reich, Sr and Maggie Poston Reich; his loving wife of 55 years, Ruth Renick Reich; son in law, Curtis Stump; brothers, Paul Beverly Reich, Jr (Emma) Milton Lee Reich; brother and sister in laws, Sidney R. Richardson, James Wythe Renick (Mary), Keith Renick (Lucille).
Surviving to cherish his memory: wonderful and loving children, Joseph Herman Reich, Jr. (Kathie), Linda Reich Stump, Nancy Jean Reich, Bill Reich (Marlene); grandchildren, Cherie Nicole Reich, Paul Benjamin Hammond (Sarah), Rebecca Jean Hammond, Jamie Weddle, and Kara Danielle Reich; brother, Louis Reich (Ruth); sister, Doris Richardson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, Private First Class, serving in Korea in the 693 Eng. Depot Co. Infantry.
He was retired from Norfolk Southern in 1989 and worked at Drill Carrier in Salem.
He served as Master of Mountain Lodge No. 140 in New Castle and was District Deputy of the 41st Masonic in 1981.
He was a fifty year plus member of Chapter 1678 of the Eastern Star and the Mountain Lodge 140.
He was a founding member of the Upper Craig’s Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Treasured times with friends include playing dominoes, various card games; he participated in caning chairs and refinishing wood furniture.
He always was available to assist those in need.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Gideon’s International, Salem-Craig County Camp at PO BOX 1291, Salem, VA 24153 or the Upper Craig’s Creek Fire Department at 4296 Upper Craig’s Creek Road, Catawba, VA 24070.
Funeral services will be at 10 am on Saturday, January 18, 2017 at Lotz Salem Chapel with Rev. John Abbott officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Lotz Funeral Home, 1330 East Main Street, Salem, VA 24153.
