Thomas Michael Hufford, “Tom,” 86-years old, of Salem, VA, passed away on August 29, 2021.

Thomas Hufford is survived by his two daughters, Karen Hufford, of Lexington, VA, and Jill Hufford, of Fincastle, VA, and his younger brother, Frederick M. Hufford of Charleston, West, VA. He was born to Genevieve Eloise Kirley Wippel Hufford of Huntington, West Virginia, and Anthony Wippel of Huntington, West Virginia, on August. 14, 1935. He also has two granddaughters, Morgan Dilling and Samantha Hufford, and a beloved great-granddaughter, Melah Grace Dilling, daughter of Morgan and James Dilling.  He was also very fond of James Dooley, as well as his nephew, Timothy Hufford, and niece, Rebecca Hufford. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada D. Hufford, and Michael Hufford, and his brother, Daniel Lee Hufford. All, of whom, meant the world to him.

Thomas graduated from St. Joseph High School in Huntington, West VA, in 1953, and he was President of his class. He was also a star basketball player and a stellar baseball player while in high school, leading his teams to many victories. He was offered a full baseball scholarship to The University of Richmond but ended up going to Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, VA, where he graduated in 1957.  After college, he was also in the army reserves at Fort Knox.

He was Planning Commissioner of Roanoke County for many years, and also a local politician, a ‘Big’ Democrat. He ran for State Senate and Congress of Virginia back in the seventies, and he continued to be a strong voice in politics all of his life.

Thomas was a prominent insurance agent and owner of Hufford Insurance in Roanoke, Virginia. He was much loved by all who knew him. He never met a stranger, and often shared his sage life advice with all passersby. He was a friend to all he met. He very much loved his family, and he devoted his life to them. He loved his horses and ponies, and greatly enjoyed going to local horse show competitions with his daughters. He cared for his horses on his property at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains, and he truly loved his home where he remained for over fifty-five years.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Salem, VA.
