Steven Marshall "COS" Oliver, 63, passed away with peace and grace at his home and received his heavenly crown on February 12, 2021.
Steven was born and lived in Roanoke County, Salem, VA all of his life. In his youth, he was a paperboy and loved riding trail bikes. He graduated from Andrew-Lewis High School in 1975 and got his first “real job” at Roanoke College doing janitorial work. He started his construction career at 17 years old where he learned various jobs of construction, like carpentry, laying brick, plastering, and concrete work. He helped build and remodel many houses and buildings in the Roanoke Valley. He helped paint the “Shooting Star” roller coaster at Lakeside for the 1976 bicentennial. Steven was talented and loved working with his hands.
In 1986, he began his career working many different jobs, at Norfolk-Southern Railroad and retired after 34 years of service. He was known to many as "Cosmo" or "Cos".
Most of all, Steven loved Jesus and tried to live a life that reflected Jesus’ commandment to “love thy neighbor as thy self”. He was always willing to help others and gave of his time and finances to accomplish this goal.
Steven was loving husband of 25 years of marriage, and a father who worked very hard to provide a quality life for his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Linda, and two daughters, Jordan and Stephanie.
Other survivors who will miss him very much are his father, James Marshall Oliver of Salem, VA.; brother, Matthew M. Oliver, of Salem, VA.; sister, Amy O. Henley, of Roanoke, VA.; and, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his mother, Cleo Martin Oliver.
He will be remembered and deeply missed by many other friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
A celebration service of Steven's life will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at Lotz Funeral Home, 1330 East Main Street, Salem, VA. The family will receive friends from 2 pm until 3 pm followed by a brief indoor graveside service at the funeral home.
Due to mandates by our Governor, we will be following the guide lines for social distancing and masks.
In lieu of flowers, Steven wishes were that donations be made and mailed to, The Samaritan Inn, 543 Salem Ave., SW, Roanoke, VA 24016, so that honor and glory may be given to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
