Opal Jean Yates Sowder
May 28, 1932 – March 14, 2018
Opal Sowder, 85, passed away peacefully in her Roanoke County home on Wednesday morning. She is preceded in death by her husband, William James Sowder; her mother, Dora Yates Perdue; stepfather, Harry Lee Perdue.
Opal is survived by her sons, Randall Sowder and wife, Dorothy, and Steven Sowder and wife Tracie, grandchildren, Logan Sowder, Evan Sowder, Alec Sowder, and Madison Sowder.
She was part of the CommUNITY Church family. Opal retired in 1990 after a 38 year career with the Virginia Department of Transportation. In retirement, Opal enjoyed traveling and tending her beautiful flower gardens. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she loved them all dearly. Opal was a sweet, kind, and compassionate mother, grandma and friend. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to her close companion, friend and caregiver, Jenny Williams Lee. Opal’s life was enriched by Jenny’s care, friendship, and company in her last few years of life.
The family will celebrate Opal’s life with a gathering of friends and family on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home Salem. The Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Lotz Chapel Salem. Friends and family will be received at Opal’s house immediately following the service.
