John "Jack" Thomas Abbott

In loving memory of John “Jack” Thomas Abbott who passed away peacefully at LewisGale Medical Center with his family at his side on July 16, 2022.

Jack was born in Westbury, New York on October 22, 1944 to James Edward Abbott and Margaret Cecelia Abbott, both deceased. He graduated from Westbury high school. He then went on to C.W. Post College before voluntarily enlisting in the US Army in 1967. He dedicated years of service, attended flight school, was a Captain who served in the Vietnam war and was awarded multiple distinguished medals of honor. He devoted his post military career to the hospitality industry.

Jack was best known by his extraordinary work ethic, huge hugs, infectious laugh and giant sense of humor. He fought hard and loved hard all the days of his life.

Jack is survived by his children, Vicki Carroll Markey, Dean Thomas Carroll, and Sean Thomas Abbott and partner Angela; he was the beloved step father of Missie Degon; former wife, Catherine Carroll; long time devoted companion, Deborah Hall, his cherished twin sister, Kay Pizzariella and husband John; grandchildren, Heather Carroll and partner Ethan, Brett Carroll and wife Kristin, Brendan Carroll and partner Ariel, William Abbott, and Emily Abbott; great grandchildren, Berkley, Bailey and Bennett Carroll; nieces and nephews, Kath Burchfield and husband Rand, Maureen Beasley, Eileen Snyder and husband JR, Thomas Connolly, Jr. and wife Olivia, Jean Marie, John and wife Kristen, and Tina Pizzariella, Brendan Brown and partner Gabrielle, Peter Brown and wife Megan, and Elizabeth Rohan and husband John; and many great nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Eva and Robert Paxton, Robert Jones and devoted friends Gabrielle and Randy Gatzke.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Connolly, George Connolly, and James Abbott.

The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 10:00 until 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Lotz Funeral Home at 11:00 following the visitation with Rev. Fr. Stephen McNally officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Finally, a Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at the American Legion Post 3, 710 Apperson Drive, Salem, VA, 24153.
