Joanne Wakeman Reed

Joanne Wakeman Reed, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully, at Harmony Memory Care in Roanoke VA, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the age of 80, and is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Joanne graduated from Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA, and Bridgewater College. She loved and served the Lord Jesus in multiple ways.  From teaching Sunday School and leading many children’s churches, she was known as a teacher up to the very end of her life. She and her husband, Benny, led multiple camps at Camp Bethel, of Fincastle, VA. Joanne and Benny loved to camp with great friends and had various camping adventures over their 57 years of marriage. Their favorite sites included Fishnet, in Front Royal Virginia, Watoga State Park in West Virginia, and many other cherished places. Joanne also loved to use her talents to serve the Lord and community through her sewing projects. These included sewing costumes for church plays, supplying the garments for the Judah Dance Team, creating puppets for children’s ministry, making beautiful flags, and blessing dear friends and family with multiple garments. She delighted in passing on her knowledge of sewing to her grandchildren as well as others. Joanne truly delighted in God’s creation, especially on annual trips with her whole family and dear friends to the Outer Banks of NC.

Joanne is survived by husband Elias (Benny) Reed; three children: Amy Beecher and husband Grant, Julie Hare and husband Matt, David Reed and wife Laura; and ten grandchildren: Hannah Beecher and fiancé Ryan Wong, Tabitha Creasy and husband Adam, Bethany, Estelle, and Micah Beecher; Savannah, Madison and Jackson Hare; Moriah and Natalie Reed, as well as many other relatives and dear friends.

A celebration of life will be held at Summerdean Church of the Brethren on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 11:30am. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:30. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Summerdean Church of the Brethren, or Camp Bethel in Fincastle, VA.
