Harold J. King, 94, of Salem passed away at Lewis Gale Medical Center on November 9, 2022.

A native of Virginia he was the husband of the late Nellie Harmon King for 55 years and the son of Robert R. King and Ada Eanes King, both deceased. Harold was a member of the United States Marine Corp from June 1948 until 1952 stationed in Paris Island, SC. He was promoted to Corporal in May 1951 and then again to Sergeant in November 1951. He was eligible for discharge in 1951, however due to the Korean conflict his discharge was extended for a year. He received an honorable discharge in April 1952.

Harold was employed by Norfolk and Western Railroad from 1944 until enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1948 and then returned to Norfolk and Western after his honorable discharge working until 1963. He then went to work for McClung Lumber Company and over the years held the positions of Purchasing Agent, Salesman, Store Manager, and Operations Manager until he retired.

Harold joined the Salem Rescue Squad in 1956 and served until 1968 when he suffered a heart attack and became a life member in 1972 and until his passing was the oldest living member of Salem Rescue Squad having 66 years of service.

Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Kathy K King and her husband Thomas and Karen K Marsh and husband Richard; grandchildren, Sarah K Arrowood and husband Steve and Eric Marsh and wife Minndy; great grandchildren, Elijah (Eli) Arrowood, Riley Arrowood, Isaac Marsh, Layne Marsh, and Tucker Marsh; his loving companion for the last 18 years, Ann Wells; and his two favorite dogs, Bear and Bentley.

The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.

A funeral service will be held at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 2:00 pm by Pastor Dan Netting. Burial with military honors will follow in Church Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Salem Rescue Squad.
