Helen Virginia Gearheart Guthrie, 102, of Salem, Virginia departed this life on October 21, 2020. Helen was a lifelong resident of Salem. She retired from General Electric and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Helen was an expert seamstress and needle worker who loved to bake. She was always proud to present one of her homemade pound cakes or fresh apple cakes. She spent much of her retirement teaching and learning new crafts at the League of Older Americans.
She was the daughter of James C. and Mary (Bales) Gearheart, Sr., and was the oldest and last surviving of 11 children.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Howard M. Guthrie; daughter, Joyce Pearson; son, Howard L. Guthrie; grandchildren, Tammy Roberts, Austin Harris and Timothy Martin.
Surviving are her daughters; Judy Ellison, of Salem, Pam (Mike) Poe, of Floyd (formerly of Salem); son, Rodney (Vickie) Guthrie, of Salem; son-in-law, Stan Pearson, of Hickory, NC; daughter-in-law, Jeannie Guthrie, of PA. (formerly of Newark, DE.); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020, at 3 p.m. in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke.
