Frederick Isbon Apgar, age 93, of Lafayette went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 22, 2022. He was preceded in death by his father Walter Roberson Apgar, mother Hazel Shelor Apgar and two beloved brothers, Donald David Apgar and Robert Michael Apgar. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jeanette Hall Apgar, daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth A. and Todd L. Peters of Salem, granddaughter Lauren E. Peters of Richmond, grandson Thomas W. Peters of Salem, sister Ruth Irene Glock of Ellicott City, MD, sister-in-law Mildred Mills Apgar of Lafayette and Charlotte Richardson Apgar of Elliston as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Fred was a lifelong resident of Lafayette and member of Lafayette Gospel Church (formerly Lafayette UMC). He was a graduate of Shawsville High School, served 4 years in the Navy during the Korean War and married his sweetheart, Jan, in August of ’52. His love for home, church and family were steadfast. Working in the family store, Sunset Service Center, was his best loved occupation. He enjoyed collecting lamps, feeding the birds and mowing.
Family will receive visitors from 2:00 – 4:00 on Sunday, September 25th at Lafayette Gospel Church with funeral service immediately following. A private burial service for family will be held at 11:00am on Monday at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lafayette Gospel Church 5310 Walthall Street, Lafayette, VA 24087.
