Frances Mowles, 94, of Salem, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, August 28th.
Frances was born in Winston-Salem on March 12, 1927. Born to immigrant parents from Norway and orphaned at the age of five, she was raised in the Methodist Children’s Home until her eighteenth birthday. Life brought her soon thereafter to the Roanoke Valley where she lived the remainder of her days.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Pearl Christiansen; her son, Robert; and her sister, Jeanette. She is survived by her husband, Bobby; her daughter, Denise Pollard (Bob) her grandchildren Matt Pollard (Andi) and Tracy Hale (Josh) and her beloved great-grandchildren, Mason, Claire, Maclin and Graham; and nephews Gene and Forrest Beeco.
As a nurse familiar to many in the Salem area, Frances was known as “Granny,” even at a younger age. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church family in Salem for over 50 years and when she was not in her kitchen, canning vegetables and fruit, she would be traveling often to her favorite place, Sanibel Island, FL.
Frances was the definition of a strong woman and she provided the best example of self-reliance and kindness to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. May she rest in peace.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2021 at Lotz Salem Chapel. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Christian Church Salem. Donations may be made online via PayPal: http://www.firstchristiansalemva.com/online-giving OR by mail: 712 Front Ave. Salem VA 24153.
