Colonel Shirley Wallace “Whitey” Williams, 88, of Salem, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, August 21, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Shirley and Lillie S. Williams; and previous wife, Sylvia Vecello.
Shirley was born on October 6, 1928 in Norfolk, VA to William Shirley and Lillie S. Williams.
Growing up in Pasquotank, NC and Great Bridge, VA. Attending school in NC and Great Bridge, VA. Shirley played trombone for his High School Band. Graduated from VA Poly Technical Institute with a BS Degree in Animal Science. Shirley was on the committee for the class ring that year he graduated. Shirley worked as a Sales Person most of his life. He was in the Cosmopolitan Club of Roanoke. Serving in all offices of the club, and as merits director of the TRACK meet for 10 years. Commissioned as 2nd Lt. and orders for active duty in 1952. Served two years active duty and 32 years in the USAR; retiring as rank of Colonel. After he finished his active duty in the Army, Shirley worked for International Harvester for 10 years, Shackleford Cox for 5 years.
He was a Mason and a 2nd Brother of the Knights of Columbus, then in the real estate business for 30 years.
He was also a Member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Salem, VA for 63 years and an Usher for 52 years.
Shirley is survived by his wife of 14 years, Janet Andrews-Williams; daughter, Lisa W. Andrews; and grandson, David Hunter Andrews; step daughter, Doreen and Michelle Andrews-Hinder of Cleveland, Ohio, children: Matt and Molly; stepdaughter, Pamela Andrews Bisnett of Roanoke, VA, Child, Ashley; Dawn and Jim Piggott’s children, April Piggott and TJ Piggott; stepson, Joseph Andrews of Petersburg, VA, child, Joshua.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, August 28, 2017 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 314 Turner Rd, Salem, VA 24153.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a memorial gift to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 314 Turner Rd, Salem, VA 24153.
