Dr. Michael L. Woods

March 31, 1945 ~ March 13, 2024 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Tribute

Dr. Michael Leonard Woods of Salem, Virginia passed away on March 13th. He was born on March 31,1945 to Edwin A. Woods and Harriet Coffey Woods in Detroit, Michigan. He spent most of his boyhood in Kenton, Ohio. After attending Bowling Green University and then graduating from Ohio State University Dental School in 1970, he entered the US Army Dental Corp as a Captain. He served one year at Fort Stewart, Georgia and 11 months in Vietnam. He met his wife, Lynn, while at Ohio State and they were married in 1969. Upon discharge from the Army in 1972, he moved his family to the Roanoke Valley and practiced family dentistry there for 39 years. He was a faithful member of the choir of First United Methodist Church in Salem for over 40 years, volunteered his dental services and hosted many benefit events for the Bradly Free Clinic, participated in Missions of Mercy, and enjoyed playing weekly tennis for many years. He was a great “handyman”, enjoyed woodworking projects and was very proud of his total restoration of an old Opel GT. After retirement in 2011, he continued to volunteer his dental services and enjoyed hiking, traveling, and tending to his tomato garden.

He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Virginia Dodds.

He is survived by: His wife, Lynn, of 54 years, His daughter,  Lisa Wade of Salem, son-in-law, Scott, grandson, Logan, granddaughter, Erin, His daughter, Wendi Mulligan of Cornelius, NC, son-in-law, Patrick and grandsons Michael Owen “Mo” and Neylon.

His siblings: Dale Woods and Geraldine Poling of Florida and brother-in-law Donald Dodds of Ohio and many nieces and nephews.

His family sends a special thanks to his Primary Care Team at the Salem VA Medical Center, the staff of Good Samaritan palliative and hospice, and to loving caregiver friends Sylvia, Shirley and Janet for their support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 125 W. Main Street, Salem and Bradley Free Clinic, 1240 3rd Street SW, Roanoke.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at First United Methodist Church, 125 W. Main Street, Salem on March 23, 2024 at 1:00 PM.
