JEAN SMITH WOLTZ

October 6, 1921 ~ May 14, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old
Jean Smith Woltz, a long- time resident of Salem, VA, passed away Sunday, May 14th 2017. She lived her life as she faced death- independently and her way. Her family and friends fondly remember her as a very snappy dresser, a smart business woman and someone who loved gardening, horses, and entertaining people in her home. She was the owner of the former Town and Campus dress shop in Blacksburg VA, and a long time employee of the Salem Civic Center- managing the box office and sometimes getting really good tickets to events for her family. She was a past president and honorary member of the Salem Garden Club, winning numerous awards for her flower arrangements, and a member of Guild II at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem, where she and her husband Max attended church for many years. She bestowed the name of the “Magnolias” to a group of southern lady friends who met on a regular basis at Mac and Bob’s in Salem to do whatever women typically do when they get together-talk and solve the world’s problems. A true southern woman, she declined to talk about her age, even refusing to tell doctors her birthdate. Her nieces only hope that they inherit her beautiful skin that belied her true age.

She was predeceased by her husband, Maxwell K. Woltz, mother and father, Lucille and Harry Yeager Smith, one brother, Harry Yeager Smith, Jr. and a much loved sister Carolyn Kersey - they often called each other Vashti which means beautiful and best of women- what a fitting description of them both.

Left to rejoice in her life is her devoted sister, Patricia Kaylor, brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Brenda Smith, sister-in-law Dawn Woltz, brother-in law, Claude Kersey, special friend and “love sister” Nancy Wheeler, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 2, 2017 at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
