Evelyn “Gant” Koontz Matthews
Evelyn K. Matthews passed away on May 29, 2017. She was born to Clarence E. and Mattie F. Koontz on February 14, 1912 and predeceased by her husband, C. Carl Matthews.
She left many to remember her with both love and laughter. She is survived by her children, Carol M. Williams and Kay M. Taney. Her grandchildren are R. Todd Williams (Janet), Scott M. Williams (Angela), Kelley T. Dillenberger (MaryJane), Allison W. Jacobsen (Ken), Christopher A. Williams (Carrie), Brian S. Andrews (April) and Amy A. Dexter (Brian). There are 20 great grandchildren all of whom she adored.
Evelyn’s family, her home, her faith and her town of Salem were the most important things in her Life. She graduated from Converse College with a major in organ. She played the organ for many years at Salem Baptist Church and Lotz Funeral Home.
Her family would like to thank Salem Terrace and her many friends there for the love and care they gave to her and especially Sherri Flurnoy for the laughter, friendship and care she brought to Mother.
There will be a time of visitation at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral service will be on Friday, June 2, 2017 at Salem Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Her favorite charities were Roanoke Rescue Mission and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
